The bustling port city of Guangzhou in southern China's Guangdong province is at the heart of one of the country's leading commercial and manufacturing centres. A large number of international visitors pass through the city on their way to other destinations around China, but if you do find yourself in Guangzhou, be sure to explore this dynamic and vibrant urban playground.

Sightseeing

While Guangzhou's history stretches back more than 2, 200 years, the city feels incredibly vibrant and alive. Its history and culture can be explored by visiting sites such as the Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King, home to the 2, 000-year-old tomb of the Nanyue King, Zhao Mo. Also find time for Guangxiao Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the city. Chen Clan Academy is a building of major historical importance and is one of the best-preserved and most highly decorated sites of worship in Guangdong province. When you're ready to escape the city's crowded streets, consider heading for Baiyun Mountain. Plan a hike and you'll be rewarded with incredible views out across the city when you reach the top. Alternatively, opt for the less strenuous route by catching the cable car.

Food and drink

Excellent Cantonese cuisine can be found throughout the city and whether you're looking for street food or a fine-dining experience, you'll have no problem finding a suitable venue. Panxi Restaurant is renowned for serving some of the tastiest dim sum in the city, while the food stalls at Chen Clan Academy serve an eclectic range of dishes. If you're in the mood for a room with a view, head to the Canton Tower in downtown Guangzhou, one of the tallest structures in the world. The building's restaurant, located 424 metres up in the air, provides an experience you won't forget in a hurry.
